Party Inspiration: Backyard Movie Party

Posted by Rachael Baker on 07/16/18

And now... for your feature presentation - host the premiere event of the summer by throwing a drive-in movie party in your very own backyard! This nostalgic theme will delight guests of all ages. The most difficult part? Deciding which movie to put on the big screen!

Drive-in Decor Who knew you could transform a backyard into your very own movie theatre! The only thing you really need is a projector and white sheet to hang as a screen. Other than that, there is so much room for interpretation and variation, this theme can easily be altered to fit a crowd of any age!

If your inviting the neighborhood kids, make cardboard box cars for the little ones viewing pleasure! If you’re hosting an adult premiere, put out mismatched lawn chairs and colorful towels to set a retro vibe, or patio pillows for guests to lounge on. Hanging string lights can be comparable to lights lining the movie theatre and will be a useful touch once the sun goes down!

Having a bucket filled with blankets and sweatshirts is always a fun (and necessary) addition! Prove to guests you’ve thought of everything by putting out bug spray and citronella candles to keep pesky uninvited mosquitoes away.

Concessions Get your popcorn here! Nothing goes better with a movie than candy and freshly popped popcorn. Create your own concession stand with candy and soda, and let guests pick their favorites. If you want to go with classic movie theatre candy, be sure to stock up on junior mints and milk duds! If your catering to a younger crowd, give the kiddos cheap shower caddies to carry their goodies. For more drive in movie party concession ideas visit our pinterest board.

Pop The best part of a Backyard Movie Party is that it can be catered to fit  guests of all ages! For the little ones, put out old fashioned sodas like Stewarts to create a retro feel. For an older crowd, consider hiring a bartender who can serve movie themed cocktails! If you’re showing an old black and white classic, serve some old fashioneds. Have the bartender make custom cocktails named after the characters and theme of your feature presentation. This creative detail that will impress all of your party guests!

Entertainment & Extras Take advantage of the fact that you need a ticket to see a movie. Ticket themed invites are sure to wow your viewers and impress your guests. This is a great party theme to hire a vendor that fits with the theme of the movie! Showing a movie about magic?  Hire a magician or a fortune teller as an opening act  to set the mood and excite the kids! Showing a circus themed movie, hire an acrobat to wow your guests. This party has enormous room for interpretation and can be as detail oriented an on theme as you make it! Give guests something to do while previews are playing and hire a photo booth. Set out movie themed props so guests have something to remember the night by even after the party is over.
