Real Event - A Double Surprise Proposal

Posted by Brittany Anderson on 06/10/19

Prat booked Anders Hyatt Music to play during his proposal to his now-fiance Neha. This real event story looks long, but is worth the read to hear about his double surprise story!

Prat shared, "I chose Friday, April 5th and the bar SM23 in Morristown, NJ for the proposal because that was the location of our first date and April 5th was our anniversary. April 4th is my birthday and it was my 30th birthday this year so I planned a surprise where she thought she was leading me into my surprise 30th birthday party. I had planned it out for months with my family, her family, and our friends without her knowing. My sister-in-law had told Neha that she was planning a surprise 30th birthday party for me at that bar in Morristown. Neha had been told that everything was already planned for the surprise to be around 5PM that day. So the whole time, I was planning a surprise proposal for her while everyone else knew that was the actual plan but Neha thought that she was planning a surprise birthday party for me. There were never any slip-ups and everyone played it off well without letting her have any idea of what was really going on.

I purposefully gave Neha a choice a few weeks before of either celebrating our anniversary in NYC or Morristown. I told her that I wanted to celebrate our anniversary that night at the restaurant, Ming II, which is attached to SM23 because that was the restaurant we had dinner for our first date before we went to SM23 for drinks afterward. We had never gone back there since our first date so I told her it would be nice to have dinner and drinks there for our anniversary night. Neha really loves NYC for our date nights so I told her I would also be fine doing something in NYC if she wanted. Neha obviously chose the Morristown plan for our anniversary because she thought it would be the best way to bring me to the bar for my "surprise party." My sister-in-law told Neha that they would plan the surprise birthday party for me at the bar so I would walk in to the surprise when thinking it was just me and her going there for drinks before dinner.

On the day of the proposal, Neha came to pick me up from my house to drive me to Morristown so she could stall me if needed while our family and friends got ready for "my surprise." I tried to play along that I had no idea when she got to my house by telling her that she should just park at my house and I will drive to Morristown. It was raining so Neha said she didn't want to get wet getting out of the car so she told me to just get in and she would drive. So I didn't fight it and got in the car to let her drive us to Morristown for the night. Once we got to Morristown around 2PM, she tried to stall me by first taking me to another restaurant/bar nearby for some food and a drink. She said that we could eat something first, then go to have some drinks before we go to dinner around 6-7PM. I went along with her plans to stall me since I knew exactly what she was doing. After we left the restaurant, we went to the Hyatt hotel that is attached to the Ming II/SM23 and decided to have a drink at the hotel bar before going to SM23 for drinks since it was still real early. The whole time, I was watching Neha on her phone texting at times. I obviously knew she was texting my sister-in-law to know when the surprise was ready for Neha to bring me to the bar. Anders arrived and set up at one end of the bar while the photographer helped decorate the bar with pictures of me and Neha, rose petals on the floor, and candles all over the floor. I had discussed with Anders that I wanted him to sing "You and Me" by Lifehouse as the song for the proposal as soon as I walked in with Neha. While they were setting up in the bar, our friends and family started to slowly make it to the bar to be able to see the proposal since they closed down the bar to other people for the proposal.  Due to the rain and lots of Friday evening traffic, people were late getting there so Neha was instructed to keep stalling me at the Hyatt bar even past 5PM until everyone was there for the surprise. I kept along without letting Neha know by asking her if we can go to SM23 to have drinks there and she kept insisting that we stay at the Hyatt since it was so early and we had all night to go there for dinner and drinks. Then, Neha finally got the text message from my sister-in-law that everything was ready for the surprise so she could bring me. So Neha told me that she wanted to go to SM23 since we were done with our drinks at the Hyatt bar.

The restaurant/bar are in the same vestibule as the Hyatt hotel so we just walked from inside the building to the restaurant/bar. As we were walking there, I was pretty nervous to see if it would turn out smooth and perfectly. The host for the restaurant knew that we would be coming so his plan was to stop us as soon as we got in the first door before the doors for the restaurant or bar to take her jacket from her for coat check and then usher us into the bar after that. All of our family and friends were hiding behind the bar in the dark to be able to watch the proposal. As soon as me and her walked in to the bar, Anders already was playing the instrumental for "You and Me" and then started to sing the song as soon as we got in there. Neha was completely shocked and didn't get what was going on because she thought this was my surprise birthday party. As we walked in, there was a large heart made of the rose petals on the ground so I walked with her inside the heart and got down on one knee to propose. She was completely surprised about what was happening and still in shock because she was not expecting this. I also spent months designing a ring for Neha that she really wanted by discussing with her family and friends since she never had any specific ring she wanted. I sneakily found out Neha's ring size so that even added more to her shock since she had no idea that I even had started looking for a ring since I never asked her for details on what she would like or her ring size. As soon as she said yes and I put the ring on her finger, our family and friends started cheering and came out to celebrate with us for pictures and champagne. While we were all celebrating, Anders played music for us. Anders set the mood so perfectly for the event with his music that Neha even asked if we could hire him for some part of our wedding reception or cocktail hour. After pictures and celebrating with champagne, Anders and the photographer left. Me and Neha went to a nearby restaurant banquet hall to spend the rest of our night with our family and friends for an afterparty with food, drinks, and lots of pictures. It was the perfect surprise that Neha never saw coming."
